CA State Senate District 8 Election Wrap Up
Former Assemblyman Lou Papan came in third.
Nevin had garnered many of the major endorsements in the race, from outgoing state Sen. Jackie Speier to U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, but such powerful names failed to give him the edge on Election Day.
"The only endorsement that counts for me is the people's endorsement," Yee said to an exuberant crowd of more than 100 at his campaign headquarters on Mission Street in Daly City. "Time and time again, we didn't get the newspapers and we didn't get the high muckety-mucks, but we won anyway, because it was the people."
Yee collected 50 percent of the votes to Nevin's 36 percent in a district that was almost evenly split between San Francisco and San Mateo counties. Papan came in with about 14 percent. Yee's win means he has a virtual lock on Speier's seat in the November election in the heavily Democratic district. He will run against Michael Skipakevich of San Francisco, who beat Oscar Braun of Half Moon Bay for the Republican nomination.
Yee would become the first Chinese-American to serve in the state Senate, representing the most heavily Asian Senate district in the state.
