A Monday Complaint
There is nothing I find more frustrating over the course of a day than being interrupted during a conversation (this frustrating item frequently rotates based on my mood…fyi). Over the weekend, and at random meetings and functions this week, I found myself in mid-sentence when talking to someone and then being interrupted. It was totally annoying. When answering a question, elaborating on a point, or just plain talking about a random subject…when is it appropriate to interrupt someone, mid-sentence, for clarification or to add an additional comment to the discussion? I can’t answer that, but what I do know is that when I’m interrupted in mid-sentence, I’m not happy. I mean, seriously, when I’m talking and I’m, literally, in the middle of a sentence…that’s not an invitation to anyone to just start talking.
Another form of interruption that I find totally irritating is when I’m talking to and/or meeting with someone and then we get interrupted. I mean, we are all important in our own right and have things that we can bring to every conversation, but when people are already in an established setting or meeting, it is not polite to interrupt without being invited. Now, I’m sure this is only a complaint that I have during the course of my work day, but it is still really annoying. And I don’t think I’m asking too much, right?
After being interrupted, my first inclination is to forget the whole conversation entirely. It just seems that if I’m interrupted, all bets are off and I am under no obligation to continue the conversation. OK, well that may be a bit harsh…but damnit it’s so frustrating to be interrupted.
OK I’ve complained enough for now…you all get my point. Happy Monday!
