The World Cup
Let me try to explain the World Cup to those of you who don’t know. The World Cup is being held in Germany this year and there are a total of 32 teams / countries participating. Each team is assigned to a group (8 groups in total) consisting of 4 teams each. Each team plays the teams assigned in their corresponding group. This determines the ranking for the entire World Cup and the teams that will advance past the qualifying rounds. Of course, the bad teams will be weeded out within the first few days of competition and the good teams will remain in the standings and advance to the finals. So, basically, this is approximately a month long exhibition of world athletic competition, the United States pusuit for world domination, and overall athleticism and sportsmanship.
The rest of the world takes the World Cup very seriously. I mean, it’s bigger than the Olympics in most countries, and seen as the end all be all of all sports in the world. Why isn’t the United States as excited about soccer as the rest of the world? You want to know why? Because we suck. As I am writing this, the U.S. is playing the powerhouse Czech Republic and down by 2. In soccer terms, the game is practically over. After today, the U.S. will play Italy on June 17 and then Ghana on June 22.
Good luck to the Americans (they are going to need it)!
