AsianWeek Under Fire

OK I'm temporarily bustin out of my holiday hiatus to throw down and knock some heads around. I’m sure you are all aware of the now infamous article by Kenneth Eng entitled “Why I Hate Blacks” in AsianWeek on February 23, 2007.

Within a week a tremendous wave of anger and shock from many civil rights organizations, including Asian American ones, swept across the media denouncing the article. And rightfully so. Eng’s piece is filled with hateful stereotypes and displays an abysmal knowledge of even the basic facts of history.

Unfortunately this article was not the first to upset those who read AsianWeek.

In an earlier column (January 12, 2007), “Why I Hate Asians,” he openly describes himself as an “Asian Supremacist.” For a person who claims to detest suffering under the effects of racism, he sure has a funny way of demonstrating it. In place of insulting African Americans through the use of stereotypes, here he belittles the struggles of Asian Americans by using the unfortunately all too familiar stereotypes of Asian people being ineffectual and docile. He concludes that he loves “the Asian race” despite the fact that “every race has its inferiors.” So what we have here is an arrogant elitist who fights racism with more racism. How pathetic.

Finally, there is his column “Proof That Whites Inherently Hate Us” (November 24, 2006). He uses this topic as an excuse to attack African Americans. If Whites are the villains, why does the largest part of his criticism focus on African Americans and how the Whites lionize their struggles. His evidence to support his views is criminally selective. Furthermore he explains away White racist attitudes as a product of evolution. Evolution! Such notions of applying evolution to human society were decried as far back as Charles Darwin himself. Of course, such ignorance does not stop Eng from spewing his venomous diatribes.

Let Kenneth Eng express his narrow mindedness somewhere else. Why AsianWeek published his hate-filled articles in the first place should be beyond any rational thinking person, regardless of political persuasion. Anyone who read his blog would know that he is completely filled with hate for everyone. He brings no qualifications to the table, unless one wants to count shallowness, ignorance, irritableness, and racism as assets. As a publication that claims to be the “voice of Asian Americans,” the editors of AsianWeek should be ashamed of themselves. AsianWeek does not represent me and my views. Kenneth Eng and Editor-in-Chief, Samson Wong, should be fired.

Shame on you, AsianWeek! Shame on you.

Chinese New Year Hiatus

Chinese New Year is upon me and I find myself buried under work, social commitments and other obligations. Blogging will fall off my radar for the next few weeks, which I apologize for in advance. In the meantime, entertain yourself with reading useful information on the web, channeling your chi, or pondering the importance of fingernail hygiene in the workplace.

So for all my many loyal readers out there (hi, Mom), I'll return with posts after the closing celebration of Chinese New Year in March. Good day to you.

For those who need Chinese New Year information, Wikipedia has a pretty good summary.

Queen Mary 2

So I was coasting in my helicopter yesterday and noticed this huge monstrosity floating into the Bay. This huge icon caused sailboats to crowd the Bay, cars to line up on the Golden Gate Bridge, and people to gather at any open space to view the Bay waters. What was this monstrosity you ask...It was the Queen Mary 2, the Mother of all cruise ships, docking into San Francisco.

Some quick facts about the Queen Mary 2:

-The ship is on an around-the-world-in 81-days cruise.

-The Queen Mary 2 cost $800 million and three years to design and build.

-The Queen Mary 2 displaces 151,000 tons, more than three times the size of a World War II battleship, and is 1,131.9 feet long -- 279 feet longer than San Francisco's Transamerica Pyramid is high.

-The ship carries 3,090 passengers and 1,254 crew on the QM2.

-There are 15 bars, seven restaurants, and 14 decks.

-A ticket for the top-of-the-line suite on the ship's current around-the world-in-81-days voyage costs $185,905 per person. The least-expensive cabin for the trip is $21,185.

-Portions of the voyage are cheaper -- the 14-day trip from San Francisco, sailing Feb. 5, is $36,559 at the high end and $4,199 for an inside cabin.

-The Queen Mary 2 is so large that it had to wait for a change in the tidal current to dock at Pier 27 under Telegraph Hill.

-It is the largest ship ever to sail to San Francisco since the first European vessel 233 years ago.

-Fewer than 30 feet separated the Golden Gate Bridge's underside from the ship's tallest point.

-The bar pilot must bring the ship under the Golden Gate Bridge, turn it in the San Francisco Bay and then dock it along the San Francisco waterfront in a space that only allows for a margin for error less than 70 feet.

-The ship draws 32 feet of water, but there is only 200 feet of deep water between the face of Pier 27 and shallower water.

-The ship's steering wheel is smaller than the steering wheel of a go-kart, and there is also a kind of joystick arrangement that lets officers move the propellers, mounted on pods that are similar to outboard engines on motor boats. There is no rudder.

-The ship has a combination of gas turbine and diesel electric engines that give the Queen Mary 2 a service speed of 25 knots. The vessel averaged 27 knots Friday morning, sailing up the Pacific off Puerto Vallarta.

-The ship also has formal nights ("one of the most distinctive parts of the Cunard experience," the company says); no one in jeans and flip-flops need show up for dinner.

What's the Big Deal

Dear Mayor Newsom,

I would like to commend you on your great job as Mayor of San Francisco. You have been working hard to lower the crime rate, fight homelessness, and start your re-election campaign. With your high approval ratings, how could you lose?

I’m glad you understand the hardships and sacrifices that go into being a staffer and campaign manager for an elected official. Not too many people do. You understand the commitment, hard work, and long hours usually go unnoticed and unappreciated. But oh no, not to you. You compensate your campaign manager not with extra pay or comp time off, but with sleeping with his wife...you know, to keep her from getting lonely and all. I praise you on such dedication to keep your campaign manager’s loved one happy and content while he is strategizing and working for you. Talk about benefits. What other employers can offer anything better?

I don’t understand how this incident could get you bad publicity, since you were only trying to help. I mean, you apologized for having an affair and participating in adultery. It’s not like you sold nukes to terrorist or killed anyone, you just made a tiny error in judgment, and that’s not against the law. So don’t let critics get to you. What more do they want?

In conclusion, I would like to tell you that I am grateful you are the mayor of the greatest city in California. You make us so proud. Good luck in your re-election campaign.

Best Regards,

Concerned Citizen
